Human Resources & Staffing Challenges

By Charles Tan

This area is the absolute heart of the Housekeeping department, yet it is often where the most persistent challenges arise.

  • High Staff Turnover: Housekeeping is physically demanding and sometimes perceived as a thankless, behind-the-scenes job. This often leads to short tenures, forcing the hotel into a costly and time-consuming cycle of constant recruitment and re-training.

  • Labor Shortages: During peak seasons, the department frequently struggles to find enough staff. This places an immense burden of overwork on the remaining team members, which can directly impact the quality of cleaning and attention to detail.

  • Insufficient Training: When under pressure to fill positions quickly, proper training can sometimes be overlooked. This leads to gaps in essential knowledge, such as the correct application of cleaning chemicals, standardized bed-making techniques, and a general lack of overall attention to detail.

  • Breaches in Discipline & Ethics: This includes issues like chronic lateness, unannounced absenteeism, and impolite behavior towards guests. In severe cases, it can even involve the devastating problem of theft of guest property.
